Understand the data
Where records come from and how to read their citations and image credits.
Mnemo Atlas brings together information from external references and records where it came from. Citations help you inspect the evidence behind an entry, fact, or connection. They do not guarantee that the information is correct.
Wikidata is the main source for imported records and the main system used to identify entries across imports. Each Wikidata item has an identifier such as Q90 for Paris.
An import first produces a preview report. A maintainer reviews the report before running the import that writes records. Items already matched to the same Wikidata identifier are not added again as new entries.
Imported citations point to the relevant Wikidata item. Connection citations may also link to the statement from which the relationship was read.
The catalog can link to established reference vocabularies, also called controlled vocabularies:
| Vocabulary | Used for |
|---|---|
| Getty AAT | Terms for styles, materials, techniques, and other classifications. |
| Getty ULAN | Identifiers for people and organizations associated with art and architecture. |
| Getty TGN | Identifiers for places. |
An AAT chip links a concept to its external term. The mapping can be exact, close, broader, narrower, or related; a link alone should not be read as proof of an exact match.
Other sources include books, papers, articles, and reference pages. Museum collections can be used to select records through Wikidata. Direct imports from museum collection systems are not part of the current public workflow.
The entry's Links and sources panel separates three purposes:
| Section | What it contains |
|---|---|
| Anchors | External identifiers for the same subject, such as Wikidata or Getty records. |
| Read more | Additional reading, such as Wikipedia or an official website. |
| Sources | References cited for facts and connections. |
An external identifier helps distinguish records with similar names. Duplicate prevention depends on those identifiers; records without one can still be duplicated.
An official website listed under Read more is not automatically a citation for every fact on the entry.
A citation can refer to an entire entry, a particular fact, or a connection. Check what it is attached to: a source for the entry as a whole does not necessarily support each individual value.
Source badges show how the catalog rates each source:
| Badge | Rating |
|---|---|
| Tier I | Authoritative |
| Tier II | Solid |
| Tier III | General |
These labels are source classifications within Mnemo Atlas. They are not independent guarantees of accuracy. A displayed fact marked Unsourced has no attached citation. A connection without a citation badge should not be assumed to have one.
Citations also record how the reference relates to the claim: source, support, dispute, evidence, extension, or data source. A dispute citation identifies disagreement rather than support.
Proposed means a record is awaiting acceptance. Accepted means it has passed the relevant approval process. Neither label establishes that every fact has been independently verified.
See How entries are added for the difference between imports, queued suggestions, and proposed batches.
Entry images are referenced from Wikimedia Commons. Their source, author, and license information are recorded with the image and displayed in its credit. Images without usable license information are not selected for display.
If an entry has no suitable image, the interface uses a typographic placeholder. Equations may be shown as typeset formulas. These placeholders are not generated photographs of the subject.
Follow an image's credit to inspect the original file and its license details.
The project has not published a catalog-wide reuse license. Original sources and images have their own terms. Follow the relevant source or image-credit link for those details.
If a fact, citation, or image credit appears wrong, send the entry link and a supporting reference.
